Ring size in cm and inches: a guide to international conversions
“My ring size is 7” sounds clear until you open a store that uses a different sizing system. A US size number, a UK letter, and a measurement in centimeters describe different things. Before converting, you need to know whether you have a regional size label, an inner diameter, or a circumference.
This guide explains those differences with worked examples, including the common questions about 7 cm and 7 inches. Use the ring size converter when you already know a regional size, or the circumference calculator when you have measured the length around your finger.
Measurements and ring size labels are different
Inner diameter is the straight distance across the opening of a ring, excluding the metal band. Inner circumference is the distance around that opening. If you wrap a paper strip around your finger and measure its marked length, you have a circumference measurement. If you place a ruler across an existing ring’s opening, you have a diameter measurement.
For a circular opening, circumference equals diameter multiplied by π. The calculator retains precision during this calculation and rounds the values you see. A rounded diameter on a printed reference is not a promise of laboratory precision, so small differences between published charts can still occur even when their size labels appear identical.
A regional size is a label associated with a measurement under a particular convention. US size 7 does not mean 7 millimeters, 7 centimeters, or 7 inches. It also does not mean the same thing as a Japanese or Indian label of 7. Always write the system beside the number when recording a size or asking a seller about it.
How to convert centimeters or inches into millimeters
Centimeters and millimeters measure the same kind of length in different units. Multiply centimeters by 10 to get millimeters. For inches, multiply by 25.4. These unit conversions are exact; matching the resulting length to a regional ring label is a separate step that depends on the sizing reference.
For example, a circumference of 5.4 cm equals 54 mm. A circumference of 2.125 inches equals 53.975 mm. Those two readings are close, but you should keep the original measurement rather than rounding both to a convenient whole number. Choose the correct unit in the calculator so you do not need to do the arithmetic by hand.
The conversion also preserves what you measured. A 1.73 cm diameter becomes a 17.3 mm diameter; it does not become a 17.3 mm circumference. If you are unsure which measurement you took, return to the method before choosing a size. Our at-home measurement guide shows the distinction and the paper-strip steps.
Which ring size is 7 cm?
If 7 cm is the circumference around your finger, it equals 70 mm. Under the EU circumference convention, that corresponds to EU 70. It is close to US 13 in our reference, whose circumference is 69.74 mm, but the two measurements are not identical.
A 70 mm circumference sits just above this calculator’s supported measurement range. Do not force the input into the range by reducing the number. Repeat the measurement, confirm that you measured circumference, and use the seller’s chart or a jeweler’s fitting if the result is still outside the tool’s range. The tool covers a reference range rather than every possible ring size.
If you meant a diameter of 7 cm, the answer is completely different: that would be an opening 70 mm across. The circumference conversion above would not apply. This is why a measurement without its method is incomplete. Record “7 cm circumference” instead of simply “7 cm ring size.”
What is 7 inches in ring size?
Seven inches equals 177.8 mm. As a finger circumference, that is far outside the measurement range used here. Check whether you read the wrong unit, measured something other than the finger, or confused a size label with a length. A US ring size 7 is not a seven-inch measurement.
In our shared dataset, US 7 has an inner diameter of 17.30 mm and a circumference of 54.35 mm, or approximately 2.1397 inches. These values are a useful comparison when reviewing a reading that seems surprising. They are reference measurements for US 7, not a recommendation to choose that size.
Recheck the ruler’s starting point too. Some rulers have a small gap before zero, so measuring from the physical edge can add length. Use the zero mark and read the overlap mark directly. If you are using a printed ruler, verify its scale first rather than assuming a downloaded document printed at its original dimensions.
How do US, UK, EU, India, and Japan sizes differ?
US and Canada use numbered sizes. This calculator supports sizes 3 through 13 in half-size steps. UK and Australia use letters, with the whole and half-letter entries available in our reference. EU labels generally correspond to inner circumference in millimeters, rounded to a whole-number size.
India and Japan have their own numbered references. A number from either system should not be treated as a US number just because it looks familiar. Our India conversions follow the named BlueStone diameter convention, while our Japan conversions follow the 4°C BRIDAL diameter reference. Other sellers may use a different chart or brand convention.
To convert a known size, select its original system first, then choose the label. The converter compares the reference inner diameters to find the closest supported entries in the other systems. The ≈ symbol identifies approximate equivalents. A conversion does not create a new measurement of your finger or guarantee that another brand’s ring will feel identical.
What are the standard ring size increments?
There is no single increment shared by every system. A US half size, a UK half letter, and one EU circumference unit do not represent interchangeable steps. Within this website, EU size numbers advance by one millimeter of circumference, while US labels advance by half sizes across the supported reference range.
Published diameter values are rounded, and the difference between adjacent rows may not look exactly the same throughout a chart. Avoid extending a table beyond its published range by repeatedly adding a guessed diameter increment. For quarter sizes or sizes the tool does not list, ask the seller for the relevant measurement and availability.
What are the different types of ring size charts?
A diameter chart helps when you have measured a fitting ring’s inside opening. A circumference chart suits a paper-strip measurement around the finger. An international conversion chart compares regional labels through reference measurements. A printable chart adds physical circles, which only work after you verify the printed scale.
Our international ring size chart includes diameter in millimeters and circumference in millimeters, centimeters, and inches. Look at the column heading before comparing your reading. The downloadable CSV keeps the numerical reference available offline, while the printable ring sizer includes a physical scale-check line and measuring shapes.
Before using any chart, check its units, source, supported range, and intended product. Standard jewelry charts are not substitutes for Oura or another smart ring’s model-specific sizing kit. A chart supplied by the seller may also describe the particular band more usefully than a general international table.
Use conversions to compare sizes, then check the fit
Keep a short record of your measurement, units, method, hand, and finger. If a seller asks for your size, give the regional label and the underlying measurement where possible. This makes it easier to spot a misunderstanding before an order is placed, particularly when buying from a store in another country.
If your reading falls between chart entries, compare both neighbors and repeat the measurement. Do not automatically choose the larger size for every ring. Consider knuckle clearance, band width, inside shape, and preferred comfort. A professional fitting is a sensible final step for an expensive ring or a design that cannot be resized.
Finally, a size number is not a judgment about your hands. US size 7 is not inherently large for a woman, and a quoted average for men cannot identify one person’s fit. The useful question is whether the particular ring fits the intended finger. Conversion tools help organize the numbers; your fit and the seller’s instructions complete the decision.
